Commercial Greenhouse Project for Wyevale Nurseries
Project Overview
Project Name Commercial Greenhouse Installation
Location Wyevale Nurseries, Herefordshire, UK
Greenhouse Size 48 meters x 100 meters (4,800 square meters)
Duration 8 weeks January/February 2024
Background
Wyevale Nurseries, one of the UK’s largest commercial nurseries, produces nearly seven million ornamental plants, trees, and shrubs annually. Known for their dedication to quality and sustainable practices, they span 777 acres of prime growing facilities. To meet increasing demand and support eco-friendly, year-round production, Wyevale sought to expand its greenhouse facilities. After a thorough selection process, they chose Keder Greenhouse for their expertise in constructing durable, energy-efficient, and customisable greenhouse solutions.
Objectives
The primary objectives for this project included:
- Increased Production Capacity – Expanding greenhouse space to accommodate a larger variety of plants, including trees and shrubs.
- Sustainability – Incorporating environmentally friendly, energy-efficient solutions to align with Wyevale’s commitment to sustainable practices.
- Durability and Climate Control – Ensuring that the structure could withstand varying weather conditions and provide an optimal growing environment throughout the year.
- Customisation – Designing a greenhouse that meets Wyevale’s unique horticultural requirements, such as advanced climate control, irrigation systems, and flexible layout.
Project Approach
Initial Consultation and Site Assessment – Keder Greenhouse’s experts conducted a comprehensive site assessment to determine optimal placement, layout, and orientation for the greenhouse.
Client Collaboration – We collaborated closely with Wyevale Nurseries’ management and growing teams to understand specific needs, such as ventilation, temperature control, and workflow efficiency.
Challenges Addressed – During this phase, we also addressed potential challenges, including local weather patterns, soil conditions, and access for machinery.
Design and Engineering
Based on Wyevale’s requirements, we developed:
- Bespoke Design – A bespoke multi-span cathedral greenhouse design measuring 48m x 100m, using Keder’s signature multi-layered cladding, which enhances thermal insulation and light diffusion.
- Environmental Control Systems – Integrated advanced systems to regulate temperature, humidity, and ventilation, tailored to the specific needs of Wyevale’s plant varieties.
- Structural Integrity – Utilising our high tensile steel frame structure, we designed a range of tunnels capable of withstanding high wind loads and extreme weather, suitable for the Herefordshire climate.
Construction and Implementation
Minimal Disruption – The construction team mobilised on-site with minimal disruption to daily operations at Wyevale Nurseries.
Three-Stage Build Process
- Stage 1 – Completion of the foundation for each section
- Stage 2 – Erection of the structural steel frame
- Stage 3 – Installation of Keder’s thermally efficient cladding into the profile channels on the structure.
Transparent Communication – Throughout construction, Keder Greenhouse maintained regular updates and coordination with Wyevale, ensuring all project milestones were met on time.
Final Inspection and Handover
Once construction was complete, we conducted:
- Quality Assurance – A detailed inspection to ensure that all aspects of the greenhouse met high standards for both Keder Greenhouse and Wyevale Nurseries.
- Handover and Support – After successfully passing all performance checks, we formally handed over the project, accompanied by detailed documentation and ongoing support options.
Project Outcomes
The new bespoke multi-span commercial greenhouse project delivered several key benefits for Wyevale Nurseries
- Increased Production Capacity – The expanded space allowed Wyevale to grow a greater variety of plants throughout the year, improving both productivity and revenue potential.
- Energy Efficiency – With Keder’s advanced insulation, the greenhouse provides an optimal growing environment with reduced energy costs.
- Enhanced Crop Quality – Improved climate control and consistent light diffusion resulted in healthier, more robust plants, helping Wyevale maintain its reputation for high quality plants.
- Sustainability Goals Met – The project aligned with Wyevale’s sustainability goals, reducing water and energy usage and supporting eco-friendly production practices.
- Operational Flexibility – The greenhouse design allows for future upgrades, such as the addition of renewable energy sources or increased automation, ensuring the facility can evolve with Wyevale’s needs.
Conclusion
The 48m x 100m commercial multi-span greenhouse project for Wyevale Nurseries stands as a testament to Keder Greenhouse’s ability to deliver large-scale, customised solutions tailored to commercial horticultural needs. This collaboration underscores Keder’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and customer satisfaction, equipping Wyevale with the infrastructure necessary to support their growth and leadership in the UK horticulture industry.
Client Testimonial
Andy Johnson, Wyevale’s Managing Director, commented:
“As Wyevale continues its journey to modernise, grow and future proof its business in a sustainable way, we chose to work with Keder for this strategic and exciting project. Having a site that has grown and evolved over many decades we have a legacy of many small structures and site constraints. The Keder team worked closely with us, exploring the best options to redevelop the chosen site to be compatible with our existing operations whilst significantly raising the bar in terms of the quality of the growing and work environment. We are delighted with the results. The new house will deliver accelerated crop turn, improved crop quality – we are still discovering the extent of its possibilities as we push through a wide range of crop types. The team worked quickly, efficiently and tidily in delivering the project in the middle of our busy site and fitting in with our demanding schedules. We look forward to building on this project and relationship with the Keder team as we explore new opportunities.”
Project Lead Comment
Dean Tustin, Keder’s Construction Director, commented:
“The Wyevale team were brilliant to work with, they could not do enough for us during the project duration and beyond. Whilst on site they were really accommodating to our needs and really looked after the team. They put a lot of time and effort into preparing the groundwork for the foundations. The Keder Team continue to work with them to deliver other projects too. “
Colin Moore, Keder Managing Director commented:
“The Wyevale Nurseries project was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our engineering and horticultural expertise. The finished greenhouse not only supports Wyevale’s sustainability goals but also enhances their operational flexibility for future growth. Wyevale’s decision to work with us was based on knowledge of past projects for other professional growers. We have a proven product that provides superior insulation, enhanced light diffusion, durability, improved ventilation, environmental sustainability, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. We’re proud of our team’s hard work and the close collaboration with Wyevale to deliver this state-of-the-art facility.”
