In 2017, we had the immense honour of constructing a safe and sustainable environment for some of the world’s most endangered bird species. Partnering with the Kiwa Centre, we worked to create a protected flying and living space for rescued parrots, providing them with the care and security they desperately needed. This collaboration was instrumental in ensuring the rehabilitation and well-being of nearly 200 macaws, thanks to the support of the World Parrot Trust

The Vision

Two passionate conservationists, Joe Davenport and David Woolcock visited Keder HQ with a clear vision: to build a structure that would offer protection, warmth, fresh air, space and natural light for rescued parrots. Their requirements were specific, addressing the unique needs of the birds while also ensuring the long-term durability of the facility.

Our expertise in designing robust, long lasting and adaptable greenhouse structures made Keder the ideal partner for this mission.

The Keder Build

In 2017, we designed and constructed a 32m x 64m four-bay greenhouse featuring a cathedral roof vent system, raised doors, and an integral wire-caged aviary. The design incorporated multiple critical factors:

  • Beak-Proofing – We meticulously calculated the length and strength of a macaw’s beak to ensure they could not puncture the Keder material, by installing a wire cage system within the Keder structure.
  • Heating and Insulation – Internal spaces were equipped with insulation to maintain optimal living conditions.
  • Safe Access for Keepers – A chambered walkway was constructed between both ends of the structure, allowing keepers to move freely without the risk of birds escaping.

Overcoming Challenges

Constructing such an extensive and specialised facility on a rural site just outside Newbury, Berkshire, came with its challenges. One major obstacle was poor ground conditions due to heavy rainfall, which caused significant saturation. At one point, a scissor lift became stuck in the mud, temporarily halting progress. However, our dedicated team navigated these difficulties, ensuring the project was successfully completed.

The Impact

The creation of the Kiwa Centre was a much-needed facility for parrot conservation in the UK. Named after Kiwa, a rescued macaw who inspired the initiative, the centre became a sanctuary for parrots that had suffered from overbreeding and neglect.

Many of the birds arrived with overgrown beaks, deformities, and respiratory issues due to poor living conditions. With the new facility, they received the specialised care and rehabilitation they desperately needed.

The Keder structure has significantly enhanced the rehabilitation process by providing a controlled environment that closely resembles the parrots’ natural habitat. These aviaries facilitate gradual reintegration into the wild, minimising stress and improving overall health outcomes for rescued birds.

Beyond serving as a safe haven for rescued parrots, the Kiwa Centre has evolved into a global conservation initiative.

In 2020, the centre played a pivotal role in rescuing and rehabilitating a group of Grey Parrots confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade in Bulgaria and Hungary. Through coordinated efforts, these birds were successfully returned to their native habitats in Africa.

Statement from Joe Davenport, Kiwa Founder

“After meeting with Colin and Electra on site and exploring the various design options, David and I were confident that the Keder product was the perfect fit for our needs. Colin’s enthusiasm for the project reassured us that the team would go above and beyond to create the ideal environment for the parrots in distress. The final result exceeded all our expectations.”

Statement from Electra Hatcher, General Business Director at Keder Greenhouse

“At Keder Greenhouse, we were honoured to collaborate with the Kiwa Parrot Trust in their vital conservation efforts. Our mission has always been to provide sustainable and innovative solutions for environmental projects and working with Kiwa has allowed us to apply our expertise to the protection and rehabilitation of parrots. The Keder initiative ensures that these incredible birds have safe, durable, and enriching enclosures that aid in their recovery and eventual return to the wild. Seeing the impact of our structures in improving parrot welfare and conservation outcomes has been truly inspiring. We look forward to continuing our partnership and supporting the invaluable work of the Kiwa Parrot Trust.”

A Call to Action

The Kiwa Centre’s mission extends beyond rescue and rehabilitation. It is dedicated to:

  • Raising awareness about proper parrot care
  • Ending the wild parrot trade
  • Advocating for global conservation efforts

This vital work would not be possible without the support of donors and volunteers.

By supporting the Kiwa Centre, individuals can make a tangible difference in the lives of these incredible birds. Contributions help:

  • Fund the construction of new enrichment facilities
  • Expand rescue and rehabilitation efforts
  • Ensure the continued care of the parrots at the sanctuary

Conclusion

The Keder team found Joe Davenport’s drive, enthusiasm, dedication and compassion for the wellbeing of hundreds of parrots truly inspiring.

Through innovative design and unwavering commitment, we have helped create a brighter future for endangered parrots.

However, the journey does not end here. Continued support and advocacy are essential to ensuring these magnificent birds thrive – both in captivity and in the wild.
